2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13" vs. Unboxing & Reviews

Apple MacBook Pro 13" (2018): Unboxing & Review
ALSO WATCH VS. VIDEO of 2018 MacBook Pro 13 inch Unboxing!
Got my hands on the new 2018 13" Quad-Core MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, here's my initial unboxing & impressions. Subscribe for the review!
Apple dropped updates to both the new 13 inch and 15 inch MacBook Pro with Touchbar featuring quad-core & 6-core Intel 8th gen processors, up to 32GB of RAM, 4TB of storage and a near $7,000 price tag. No updates to the 13" MacBook Pro non Touchbar, 13" MacBook Air or 12 inch MacBook. When will we see those?
Versus Video Transcripts:
00:00
what's up guys this is Mike the Detroit
00:02
Borg and it's great to be back with some
00:04
new hardware from Apple so apple has
00:06
updated the 13 inch and 15-inch MacBook
00:08
Pro with touch bar so in terms of the
00:11
13-inch the big new bullet points here
00:13
include the new eighth generation
00:14
quad-core CPUs replacing the dual core
00:17
we also get a true tone display
00:18
hands-free Siri command and the more
00:21
important design change here is a
00:23
redesigned third-generation Butterfly
00:25
keyboard which is designed to be quieter
00:27
and more reliable some other minor
00:30
tweaks include bluetooth 5.0 a
00:32
redesigned option key symbol and we also
00:35
get symmetrical fundable 3 ports both
00:37
the left and right side have the exact
00:39
same speed this time the standard
00:41
configuration starts off at $17.99 then
00:44
I get to a 2.3 gigahertz core i5 you can
00:47
upgrade through 2.7 gigahertz core i7 8
00:50
gigs of ram is standard but you can look
00:51
great - 16 gigs for $200 I think that
00:54
might be worth the upgrade price in
00:56
terms of the RAM specs it's lpddr3 which
00:58
is the same as last year which is
00:59
clocked at 20 133 megahertz in terms of
01:02
storage 256 is standard but you can
01:04
upgrade all the way up to 2 terabytes
01:05
for a mere $1,400 and of course it's
01:08
available in silver or space grave first
01:11
up we have some paperwork and the
01:12
paperwork is pretty familiar of course
01:14
we have a QuickStart guide in this case
01:15
it's highlighting hi Sierra we also get
01:18
a set of Apple stickers and some
01:20
warranty info in terms of our power
01:22
adapter again this is 61 watts with a
01:24
USB type-c connector now this adapter is
01:26
a pretty familiar design by now we have
01:28
folding prongs which can be pulled off
01:30
to add an extension cable or swap out
01:33
for international wall adapters but this
01:35
is actually a redesigned power adapter
01:37
at least internally inside it has been
01:40
cushioned for better shock protection
01:41
but they've also replaced the metal USBC
01:44
connector for a plastic design not sure
01:47
why they did this but it might be more
01:48
durable now the setup in this case is
01:51
slightly different to take advantage of
01:52
some of the new features with this
01:54
MacBook Pro now this is the first Mac to
01:56
use the Siri wake up come and so just
01:59
like an iOS device or your home pod you
02:01
can now use your voice for hands-free
02:03
Siri interaction and of course you have
02:06
to train your voice in order for this
02:07
feature to work now this works thanks to
02:09
the t2 chip and the three microphone
02:12
array similar to Iowa
02:13
the t2 chip allows the computer to
02:16
monitor for your voice using very little
02:18
power so as long as the computer is open
02:21
you can command Siri even when it's
02:23
locked or sleeping the weather is
02:26
looking good on Sunday up to 77 degrees
02:29
also new to the Mac but not new to iOS
02:32
is true tone so again we get a
02:34
demonstration of how the true tone
02:36
display works so in addition to
02:39
brightness the adaptive sensors will
02:41
also measure for color temperature so
02:43
this will reflect the ambient lighting
02:45
conditions of the room the computer is
02:47
in and what's great is true tone extends
02:49
to attach displays like the LG 5k
02:51
display or the Thunder will display and
02:54
even the touch bar is using true tone to
02:57
match the display on the MacBook so
02:59
that's pretty impressive now because
03:00
true tone needs to use the ambient light
03:02
sensors and the t2 chip in the MacBook
03:04
Pro to adapt the display color
03:06
temperature this will not work if the
03:08
lid of the MacBook Pro is closed so for
03:11
a test displays if you want to take
03:13
advantage of true tone you'll need to
03:15
make sure your MacBook Pro is open the
03:16
display is covered edge to edge with a
03:18
glass panel with a nice anti-reflective
03:20
coating so although we have a glossy
03:22
display it does one of the best jobs in
03:24
terms of mitigating glare that i've seen
03:26
on any other laptop the IPS display once
03:29
again is 13.3 inches with a resolution
03:31
of 2560 by 1600 that's good for 227
03:35
pixels per inch
03:36
we get 500 nits of maximum brightness
03:39
along with the wide color spectrum of
03:41
the DCI p3 spec we still have a 720p
03:45
FaceTime HD camera in the same location
03:48
as before with an LED indicator along
03:50
with our ambient light sensors in terms
03:52
of the touch bar once again this
03:53
replaces the traditional function key
03:55
row for contextual aware and interactive
03:59
OLED display it's still a really nice
04:02
looking design then I discover new uses
04:04
for it every time but it's still
04:05
something you have to consciously look
04:07
at to use face ID didn't make it to the
04:09
Mac books just yet but touch ID is still
04:11
here at the red edge of the touch bar so
04:14
again this is the same touch ID too
04:16
sensor so it's pretty quick and accurate
04:18
you can use it for unlocking your
04:20
MacBook or for authenticating for
04:22
passwords or payment the glass force
04:24
touch trackpad is still here as well so
04:27
once again is
04:27
of a mechanical trackpad we have a
04:29
taptic motor that replicates physical
04:32
clicks again it's pressure-sensitive
04:33
which gives you a new layer to the user
04:36
interface and is still one of the best
04:38
track pads on any laptop there is one
04:41
visual tweak that's unique to the 2018
04:43
model and that's a slightly redesigned
04:45
symbol on the option key which is a bit
04:48
taller than it was from the 2017
04:50
redesign so I'm not sure why they keep
04:52
changing this but hopefully they've
04:53
settled on this and they can roll this
04:55
out to other keyboards later this year
04:57
once again we get a backlit keyboard
04:58
with individual LED lights for each key
05:01
so it's a very clean looking backlight
05:03
but by far the most important news here
05:05
is that Apple has added a silicon layer
05:07
underneath each key camp which is
05:10
designed to mitigate dust intrusion so
05:12
it won't interfere with the operation of
05:14
the keys but this also changes the
05:16
clicking tone of the keys it's not
05:18
necessarily quieter but it's less
05:20
annoying so let's go ahead and take a
05:22
listen to them side by side now
05:32
personally I've been a big fan of this
05:34
keyboard design since it came out
05:35
because it's so fast there's less
05:37
mechanical action and the keys are
05:39
extremely solid and wide so you can hit
05:41
the keys really quickly and accurately
05:43
and this third-generation for the most
05:45
part feels exactly the same but it's a
05:47
little softer sounding and initially it
05:49
doesn't feel quite as crisp as the
05:51
second generation but if I wasn't
05:53
comparing them side by side they
05:54
wouldn't know the difference
05:55
now ventilation is going to be very
05:57
important for this computer because of
05:58
those quad-core chips and if you go for
06:00
the i7 you want to make sure this
06:02
computer can breathe very well now
06:04
there's lots of ventilation here but
06:05
it's pretty well hidden
06:07
so you'll find ventilation inside the
06:09
hinge as before but you also find
06:11
ventilation along the bottom side edge
06:13
which is also part of the speaker design
06:15
Apple also redesigned the internal
06:18
speaker system so although the speaker
06:20
grilles on the top are still fake
06:22
outlets the speaker's actually come from
06:24
the vents on the side the speakers and
06:26
the chambers have been redesigned for
06:28
the new larger battery and the effect
06:30
here is definitely an improvement to my
06:32
ears it's not louder but the quality of
06:34
the sound has improved slightly so
06:36
there's less of that tinny or muffled
06:38
sound and more of a fuller wider sound
06:41
after Christopher Pike requests
06:43
permission to come aboard
06:46
this is awkward but the best way to give
06:48
into a cold Street to jump right
06:51
I'm here a second man in the discovery
06:53
under regulation 19 Section C the bottom
06:55
of the MacBook has a single removable
06:58
panel which is fastened with pentalobe
07:00
screws and it's protected by four black
07:02
plastic feet
07:03
however this computer really is not user
07:06
upgradeable everything is glued soldered
07:09
and otherwise currently fixed to the
07:11
motherboard of this computer so make
07:13
sure you get the configuration you want
07:14
from the store because you can't change
07:16
it later we still get fourth undoable
07:18
three ports two on the left two on the
07:20
right and a headphone jack but this time
07:22
the ports on the right side have the
07:24
same 40 gigs per second throughput as
07:26
the ports on the left side previously
07:28
only the 15-inch MacBook Pro offer this
07:30
capability but we finally get it in the
07:31
13-inch so two years later this four
07:34
port design is still kind of a headache
07:36
for a lot of people because it will need
07:37
some adapters to use legacy peripherals
07:40
but these high-speed ports can drive a
07:42
5k display high-speed storage and most
07:45
recently an external GPU Apple even
07:47
worked with black magic on an external
07:50
GPU design which I'll feature in a
07:52
separate video Apple did redesign the
07:54
battery pack here from five cell to six
07:56
cell and its larger up to 58 watt hours
07:59
from 54 and a half watt hours now that
08:02
doesn't mean we have more battery life
08:03
it's still 10 hours but this offsets the
08:05
power demands of the new quad-core CPUs
08:08
also interesting is that although
08:09
they've increased the size of the
08:11
battery they've kept the weight the same
08:13
by shaving the chassis down just
08:15
slightly now take a look at our
08:17
synthetic benchmarks comparing this to
08:19
the same spec version from the last
08:20
generation we can see this is one of the
08:23
biggest spec bumps we've seen for a
08:25
macbook pro since 2011 so when it comes
08:27
to Geekbench the single core score is up
08:30
modestly but the multi-core score going
08:32
from 2 core 2 quad cores is a huge
08:35
difference we go from about 8800 to over
08:38
15,000 or closer to 16,000 graphics
08:42
performance is up only slightly so again
08:44
we have an integrated GPU there is no
08:46
dedicated GPU on the 13-inch model and
08:49
this time is the Intel iris + 655 chip
08:52
this replaces the standard 650 chip from
08:55
last generation
08:56
so with Cinebench despite the massive
08:58
cpu gains almost twice the performance
09:00
of the previous design the OpenGL score
09:03
is only separated by a few
09:05
frames-per-second SSD speeds are
09:07
unchanged from the last generation which
09:09
is to say they're extremely fast there
09:11
is one side effect of these powerful
09:13
chips that I noticed during my
09:14
benchmarking and that's the fact that
09:16
these get quite hot under low so the
09:19
fans tend to spool up more so than they
09:21
did with the dual-core processors of
09:23
course that's the trade-off of more
09:25
power you get better performance but you
09:27
also get more heat that isn't to say
09:29
that this computer runs hot all the time
09:31
just when it's under load speaking of
09:32
which one of the biggest controversies
09:34
with this MacBook Pro when it first
09:35
launched was thermal throttling which
09:38
was just recently fixed with the patch
09:40
so now we get consistently superior
09:42
performance to the previous laptop so
09:44
ultimately this really is a significant
09:46
update it fixes one of the biggest
09:48
uncertainties about the previous design
09:50
which was the keyboard and makes a
09:51
significant upgrade to the CPU but this
09:54
remains a very expensive computer this
09:57
really is for people who know they need
09:58
the tools that this machine offers
10:00
otherwise it's kind of an extravagance
10:03
that it really goes unused which makes
10:05
it unfortunate that they did not at
10:07
least add a revised keyboard to the
10:09
baseline MacBook Pro with a function key
10:12
row now if you want even more probe
10:14
features I will be covering the new
10:15
15-inch MacBook Pro with the core i9 CPU
10:19
and 32 gigs of ram so make sure you stay
10:21
tuned for that video hope you guys
10:23
enjoyed this one and if you did please
10:25
let me know with a like and I'll see you
10:27
again in the next video
00:00
(electronic glitching)
00:01
-Yo guys!
00:02
Jonathan here with an unboxing of the brand new
00:03
2018 13 inch MacBook Pro for the first time ever.
00:07
- We did it again!
00:08
- We have a quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro.
00:11
I am excited, let's go.
00:13
(upbeat music)
00:16
So, here we go, and I realized I don't have a knife,
00:18
so I think I'm gonna have to try and use this bottle cap.
00:24
Probably not the best idea, but.
00:28
Hmm.
00:31
There we go, got it!
00:33
So, like I said,
00:34
I am super excited for this 13 inch MacBook Pro.
00:37
I'm really excited for the six-core 15 inch MacBook Pro,
00:39
but again, I've wanted a quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro
00:43
for the longest time.
00:44
Something about the form factor of the 13 inch MacBook Pro
00:46
just kinda calls my name.
00:47
The 15 inch MacBook Pro does get a little heavy,
00:49
it's a little cumbersome to bring around.
00:51
So,
00:54
I'm going to responsibly go throw this away in the trash.
00:58
There will be no littering today on this unboxing!
01:03
So, if you're watching this video curious what happened
01:05
to the 13 inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar,
01:07
that actually didn't get updated and it was confusing.
01:09
Go ahead and check the video out here or down below
01:10
and that will explain everything.
01:12
Only the Touch Bar 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro were updated,
01:15
and here we are!
01:17
Now, of course, I went with Space Gray
01:18
because that is the only way you go.
01:20
Space Gray or get out, Austin.
01:22
Pullin' this MacBook Pro out of the box.
01:26
(plastic crinkles)
01:29
That satisfying plastic.
01:31
Set that off to the side for one second.
01:34
I'm gonna toss it to the side for a second.
01:36
I swear I'm gonna throw it away!
01:38
Again, if you guys have seen a MacBook Pro unboxing,
01:39
you've probably seen this before.
01:41
We get the literature inside,
01:43
MacBook Pro, and most importantly, apple stickers.
01:47
Aside from that, we have the USB-C cable,
01:49
and the USB-C power brick that is tiny,
01:53
just like the 13 inch MacBook Pro.
01:55
Again, this is the baseline Touch Bar 13 in MacBook Pro,
01:58
so it it the cheapest way
01:59
to get into a quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro.
02:02
This, of course, is maxed out.
02:04
Up to two terabytes with 16 gigabytes of RAM.
02:06
But this particular model
02:07
comes with 256 gigabytes flash storage,
02:09
And 8 gigabytes of RAM.
02:13
That's one of the coolest things
02:14
about picking up a MacBook Pro.
02:16
Is trash sliding between my feet.
02:20
(groans)
02:25
But if you pick up a MacBook Pro,
02:27
the minute you open the lid, it starts booting up,
02:29
which is kind of a cool experience.
02:31
It is talkin' to me.
02:32
Settin' this up we're going to select English
02:34
because aside from some poor Spanish,
02:37
that is the only language I know.
02:39
Curious though, if you speak multiple languages,
02:40
let me know how many with a comment down below.
02:43
Someone's wifi is named Country Mouse.
02:48
Red Robster.
02:50
Red Robster.
02:51
Now, I will be testin' this baseline 13 inch MacBook Pro
02:54
against the fastest, highest in spec,
02:55
13 inch MacBook Pro you can buy,
02:57
as well as the six-core 15 inch MacBook Pro,
02:59
but in terms of early impressions,
03:01
the quad-core CPU makes a huge difference.
03:05
As far as Geekbench goes,
03:06
last year's baseline model got a single-core score of 4,113,
03:09
and a multi-core score of 8,875.
03:13
Jumping over to this year's model,
03:14
single core is not a huge difference at 4,702,
03:17
but where we see the massive difference
03:18
is in the Multi-core score with those two extra cores,
03:21
with a score of 16,916, which is crazy.
03:25
So I've been wanting that kind of power
03:27
in a 13 inch MacBook Pro forever.
03:29
To finally see it is awesome.
03:31
I will definitely be putting this thing through its paces
03:33
in terms of video-editing, graphics performance,
03:35
photoshop, lightroom, you name it.
03:36
If you guys wanna see any in the follow up video,
03:38
definitely drop me a line or suggest it down below.
03:41
Aside from that, that's kind of my first look
03:43
at this brand new 13 inch MacBook Pro.
03:45
Super excited to stack it against all the other models
03:47
and let you know what your best bang for your buck is.
03:49
Definitely subscribe if you haven't yet
03:50
so you don't miss that.
03:52
This is Jonathan and I will catch you guys later.
03:55
(calm electronic music)
04:00
(electronic glitching)
00:00
what's up guys this is Mike the Detroit
00:02
Borg and it's great to be back with some
00:04
new hardware from Apple so apple has
00:06
updated the 13 inch and 15-inch MacBook
00:08
Pro with touch bar so in terms of the
00:11
13-inch the big new bullet points here
00:13
include the new eighth generation
00:14
quad-core CPUs replacing the dual core
00:17
we also get a true tone display
00:18
hands-free Siri command and the more
00:21
important design change here is a
00:23
redesigned third-generation Butterfly
00:25
keyboard which is designed to be quieter
00:27
and more reliable some other minor
00:30
tweaks include bluetooth 5.0 a
00:32
redesigned option key symbol and we also
00:35
get symmetrical fundable 3 ports both
00:37
the left and right side have the exact
00:39
same speed this time the standard
00:41
configuration starts off at $17.99 then
00:44
I get to a 2.3 gigahertz core i5 you can
00:47
upgrade through 2.7 gigahertz core i7 8
00:50
gigs of ram is standard but you can look
00:51
great - 16 gigs for $200 I think that
00:54
might be worth the upgrade price in
00:56
terms of the RAM specs it's lpddr3 which
00:58
is the same as last year which is
00:59
clocked at 20 133 megahertz in terms of
01:02
storage 256 is standard but you can
01:04
upgrade all the way up to 2 terabytes
01:05
for a mere $1,400 and of course it's
01:08
available in silver or space grave first
01:11
up we have some paperwork and the
01:12
paperwork is pretty familiar of course
01:14
we have a QuickStart guide in this case
01:15
it's highlighting hi Sierra we also get
01:18
a set of Apple stickers and some
01:20
warranty info in terms of our power
01:22
adapter again this is 61 watts with a
01:24
USB type-c connector now this adapter is
01:26
a pretty familiar design by now we have
01:28
folding prongs which can be pulled off
01:30
to add an extension cable or swap out
01:33
for international wall adapters but this
01:35
is actually a redesigned power adapter
01:37
at least internally inside it has been
01:40
cushioned for better shock protection
01:41
but they've also replaced the metal USBC
01:44
connector for a plastic design not sure
01:47
why they did this but it might be more
01:48
durable now the setup in this case is
01:51
slightly different to take advantage of
01:52
some of the new features with this
01:54
MacBook Pro now this is the first Mac to
01:56
use the Siri wake up come and so just
01:59
like an iOS device or your home pod you
02:01
can now use your voice for hands-free
02:03
Siri interaction and of course you have
02:06
to train your voice in order for this
02:07
feature to work now this works thanks to
02:09
the t2 chip and the three microphone
02:12
array similar to Iowa
02:13
the t2 chip allows the computer to
02:16
monitor for your voice using very little
02:18
power so as long as the computer is open
02:21
you can command Siri even when it's
02:23
locked or sleeping the weather is
02:26
looking good on Sunday up to 77 degrees
02:29
also new to the Mac but not new to iOS
02:32
is true tone so again we get a
02:34
demonstration of how the true tone
02:36
display works so in addition to
02:39
brightness the adaptive sensors will
02:41
also measure for color temperature so
02:43
this will reflect the ambient lighting
02:45
conditions of the room the computer is
02:47
in and what's great is true tone extends
02:49
to attach displays like the LG 5k
02:51
display or the Thunder will display and
02:54
even the touch bar is using true tone to
02:57
match the display on the MacBook so
02:59
that's pretty impressive now because
03:00
true tone needs to use the ambient light
03:02
sensors and the t2 chip in the MacBook
03:04
Pro to adapt the display color
03:06
temperature this will not work if the
03:08
lid of the MacBook Pro is closed so for
03:11
a test displays if you want to take
03:13
advantage of true tone you'll need to
03:15
make sure your MacBook Pro is open the
03:16
display is covered edge to edge with a
03:18
glass panel with a nice anti-reflective
03:20
coating so although we have a glossy
03:22
display it does one of the best jobs in
03:24
terms of mitigating glare that i've seen
03:26
on any other laptop the IPS display once
03:29
again is 13.3 inches with a resolution
03:31
of 2560 by 1600 that's good for 227
03:35
pixels per inch
03:36
we get 500 nits of maximum brightness
03:39
along with the wide color spectrum of
03:41
the DCI p3 spec we still have a 720p
03:45
FaceTime HD camera in the same location
03:48
as before with an LED indicator along
03:50
with our ambient light sensors in terms
03:52
of the touch bar once again this
03:53
replaces the traditional function key
03:55
row for contextual aware and interactive
03:59
OLED display it's still a really nice
04:02
looking design then I discover new uses
04:04
for it every time but it's still
04:05
something you have to consciously look
04:07
at to use face ID didn't make it to the
04:09
Mac books just yet but touch ID is still
04:11
here at the red edge of the touch bar so
04:14
again this is the same touch ID too
04:16
sensor so it's pretty quick and accurate
04:18
you can use it for unlocking your
04:20
MacBook or for authenticating for
04:22
passwords or payment the glass force
04:24
touch trackpad is still here as well so
04:27
once again is
04:27
of a mechanical trackpad we have a
04:29
taptic motor that replicates physical
04:32
clicks again it's pressure-sensitive
04:33
which gives you a new layer to the user
04:36
interface and is still one of the best
04:38
track pads on any laptop there is one
04:41
visual tweak that's unique to the 2018
04:43
model and that's a slightly redesigned
04:45
symbol on the option key which is a bit
04:48
taller than it was from the 2017
04:50
redesign so I'm not sure why they keep
04:52
changing this but hopefully they've
04:53
settled on this and they can roll this
04:55
out to other keyboards later this year
04:57
once again we get a backlit keyboard
04:58
with individual LED lights for each key
05:01
so it's a very clean looking backlight
05:03
but by far the most important news here
05:05
is that Apple has added a silicon layer
05:07
underneath each key camp which is
05:10
designed to mitigate dust intrusion so
05:12
it won't interfere with the operation of
05:14
the keys but this also changes the
05:16
clicking tone of the keys it's not
05:18
necessarily quieter but it's less
05:20
annoying so let's go ahead and take a
05:22
listen to them side by side now
05:32
personally I've been a big fan of this
05:34
keyboard design since it came out
05:35
because it's so fast there's less
05:37
mechanical action and the keys are
05:39
extremely solid and wide so you can hit
05:41
the keys really quickly and accurately
05:43
and this third-generation for the most
05:45
part feels exactly the same but it's a
05:47
little softer sounding and initially it
05:49
doesn't feel quite as crisp as the
05:51
second generation but if I wasn't
05:53
comparing them side by side they
05:54
wouldn't know the difference
05:55
now ventilation is going to be very
05:57
important for this computer because of
05:58
those quad-core chips and if you go for
06:00
the i7 you want to make sure this
06:02
computer can breathe very well now
06:04
there's lots of ventilation here but
06:05
it's pretty well hidden
06:07
so you'll find ventilation inside the
06:09
hinge as before but you also find
06:11
ventilation along the bottom side edge
06:13
which is also part of the speaker design
06:15
Apple also redesigned the internal
06:18
speaker system so although the speaker
06:20
grilles on the top are still fake
06:22
outlets the speaker's actually come from
06:24
the vents on the side the speakers and
06:26
the chambers have been redesigned for
06:28
the new larger battery and the effect
06:30
here is definitely an improvement to my
06:32
ears it's not louder but the quality of
06:34
the sound has improved slightly so
06:36
there's less of that tinny or muffled
06:38
sound and more of a fuller wider sound
06:41
after Christopher Pike requests
06:43
permission to come aboard
06:46
this is awkward but the best way to give
06:48
into a cold Street to jump right
06:51
I'm here a second man in the discovery
06:53
under regulation 19 Section C the bottom
06:55
of the MacBook has a single removable
06:58
panel which is fastened with pentalobe
07:00
screws and it's protected by four black
07:02
plastic feet
07:03
however this computer really is not user
07:06
upgradeable everything is glued soldered
07:09
and otherwise currently fixed to the
07:11
motherboard of this computer so make
07:13
sure you get the configuration you want
07:14
from the store because you can't change
07:16
it later we still get fourth undoable
07:18
three ports two on the left two on the
07:20
right and a headphone jack but this time
07:22
the ports on the right side have the
07:24
same 40 gigs per second throughput as
07:26
the ports on the left side previously
07:28
only the 15-inch MacBook Pro offer this
07:30
capability but we finally get it in the
07:31
13-inch so two years later this four
07:34
port design is still kind of a headache
07:36
for a lot of people because it will need
07:37
some adapters to use legacy peripherals
07:40
but these high-speed ports can drive a
07:42
5k display high-speed storage and most
07:45
recently an external GPU Apple even
07:47
worked with black magic on an external
07:50
GPU design which I'll feature in a
07:52
separate video Apple did redesign the
07:54
battery pack here from five cell to six
07:56
cell and its larger up to 58 watt hours
07:59
from 54 and a half watt hours now that
08:02
doesn't mean we have more battery life
08:03
it's still 10 hours but this offsets the
08:05
power demands of the new quad-core CPUs
08:08
also interesting is that although
08:09
they've increased the size of the
08:11
battery they've kept the weight the same
08:13
by shaving the chassis down just
08:15
slightly now take a look at our
08:17
synthetic benchmarks comparing this to
08:19
the same spec version from the last
08:20
generation we can see this is one of the
08:23
biggest spec bumps we've seen for a
08:25
macbook pro since 2011 so when it comes
08:27
to Geekbench the single core score is up
08:30
modestly but the multi-core score going
08:32
from 2 core 2 quad cores is a huge
08:35
difference we go from about 8800 to over
08:38
15,000 or closer to 16,000 graphics
08:42
performance is up only slightly so again
08:44
we have an integrated GPU there is no
08:46
dedicated GPU on the 13-inch model and
08:49
this time is the Intel iris + 655 chip
08:52
this replaces the standard 650 chip from
08:55
last generation
08:56
so with Cinebench despite the massive
08:58
cpu gains almost twice the performance
09:00
of the previous design the OpenGL score
09:03
is only separated by a few
09:05
frames-per-second SSD speeds are
09:07
unchanged from the last generation which
09:09
is to say they're extremely fast there
09:11
is one side effect of these powerful
09:13
chips that I noticed during my
09:14
benchmarking and that's the fact that
09:16
these get quite hot under low so the
09:19
fans tend to spool up more so than they
09:21
did with the dual-core processors of
09:23
course that's the trade-off of more
09:25
power you get better performance but you
09:27
also get more heat that isn't to say
09:29
that this computer runs hot all the time
09:31
just when it's under load speaking of
09:32
which one of the biggest controversies
09:34
with this MacBook Pro when it first
09:35
launched was thermal throttling which
09:38
was just recently fixed with the patch
09:40
so now we get consistently superior
09:42
performance to the previous laptop so
09:44
ultimately this really is a significant
09:46
update it fixes one of the biggest
09:48
uncertainties about the previous design
09:50
which was the keyboard and makes a
09:51
significant upgrade to the CPU but this
09:54
remains a very expensive computer this
09:57
really is for people who know they need
09:58
the tools that this machine offers
10:00
otherwise it's kind of an extravagance
10:03
that it really goes unused which makes
10:05
it unfortunate that they did not at
10:07
least add a revised keyboard to the
10:09
baseline MacBook Pro with a function key
10:12
row now if you want even more probe
10:14
features I will be covering the new
10:15
15-inch MacBook Pro with the core i9 CPU
10:19
and 32 gigs of ram so make sure you stay
10:21
tuned for that video hope you guys
10:23
enjoyed this one and if you did please
10:25
let me know with a like and I'll see you
10:27
again in the next video
00:00
(electronic glitching)
00:01
-Yo guys!
00:02
Jonathan here with an unboxing of the brand new
00:03
2018 13 inch MacBook Pro for the first time ever.
00:07
- We did it again!
00:08
- We have a quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro.
00:11
I am excited, let's go.
00:13
(upbeat music)
00:16
So, here we go, and I realized I don't have a knife,
00:18
so I think I'm gonna have to try and use this bottle cap.
00:24
Probably not the best idea, but.
00:28
Hmm.
00:31
There we go, got it!
00:33
So, like I said,
00:34
I am super excited for this 13 inch MacBook Pro.
00:37
I'm really excited for the six-core 15 inch MacBook Pro,
00:39
but again, I've wanted a quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro
00:43
for the longest time.
00:44
Something about the form factor of the 13 inch MacBook Pro
00:46
just kinda calls my name.
00:47
The 15 inch MacBook Pro does get a little heavy,
00:49
it's a little cumbersome to bring around.
00:51
So,
00:54
I'm going to responsibly go throw this away in the trash.
00:58
There will be no littering today on this unboxing!
01:03
So, if you're watching this video curious what happened
01:05
to the 13 inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar,
01:07
that actually didn't get updated and it was confusing.
01:09
Go ahead and check the video out here or down below
01:10
and that will explain everything.
01:12
Only the Touch Bar 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro were updated,
01:15
and here we are!
01:17
Now, of course, I went with Space Gray
01:18
because that is the only way you go.
01:20
Space Gray or get out, Austin.
01:22
Pullin' this MacBook Pro out of the box.
01:26
(plastic crinkles)
01:29
That satisfying plastic.
01:31
Set that off to the side for one second.
01:34
I'm gonna toss it to the side for a second.
01:36
I swear I'm gonna throw it away!
01:38
Again, if you guys have seen a MacBook Pro unboxing,
01:39
you've probably seen this before.
01:41
We get the literature inside,
01:43
MacBook Pro, and most importantly, apple stickers.
01:47
Aside from that, we have the USB-C cable,
01:49
and the USB-C power brick that is tiny,
01:53
just like the 13 inch MacBook Pro.
01:55
Again, this is the baseline Touch Bar 13 in MacBook Pro,
01:58
so it it the cheapest way
01:59
to get into a quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro.
02:02
This, of course, is maxed out.
02:04
Up to two terabytes with 16 gigabytes of RAM.
02:06
But this particular model
02:07
comes with 256 gigabytes flash storage,
02:09
And 8 gigabytes of RAM.
02:13
That's one of the coolest things
02:14
about picking up a MacBook Pro.
02:16
Is trash sliding between my feet.
02:20
(groans)
02:25
But if you pick up a MacBook Pro,
02:27
the minute you open the lid, it starts booting up,
02:29
which is kind of a cool experience.
02:31
It is talkin' to me.
02:32
Settin' this up we're going to select English
02:34
because aside from some poor Spanish,
02:37
that is the only language I know.
02:39
Curious though, if you speak multiple languages,
02:40
let me know how many with a comment down below.
02:43
Someone's wifi is named Country Mouse.
02:48
Red Robster.
02:50
Red Robster.
02:51
Now, I will be testin' this baseline 13 inch MacBook Pro
02:54
against the fastest, highest in spec,
02:55
13 inch MacBook Pro you can buy,
02:57
as well as the six-core 15 inch MacBook Pro,
02:59
but in terms of early impressions,
03:01
the quad-core CPU makes a huge difference.
03:05
As far as Geekbench goes,
03:06
last year's baseline model got a single-core score of 4,113,
03:09
and a multi-core score of 8,875.
03:13
Jumping over to this year's model,
03:14
single core is not a huge difference at 4,702,
03:17
but where we see the massive difference
03:18
is in the Multi-core score with those two extra cores,
03:21
with a score of 16,916, which is crazy.
03:25
So I've been wanting that kind of power
03:27
in a 13 inch MacBook Pro forever.
03:29
To finally see it is awesome.
03:31
I will definitely be putting this thing through its paces
03:33
in terms of video-editing, graphics performance,
03:35
photoshop, lightroom, you name it.
03:36
If you guys wanna see any in the follow up video,
03:38
definitely drop me a line or suggest it down below.
03:41
Aside from that, that's kind of my first look
03:43
at this brand new 13 inch MacBook Pro.
03:45
Super excited to stack it against all the other models
03:47
and let you know what your best bang for your buck is.
03:49
Definitely subscribe if you haven't yet
03:50
so you don't miss that.
03:52
This is Jonathan and I will catch you guys later.
03:55
(calm electronic music)
04:00
(electronic glitching)
